Mountaineering

All of our mountaineering courses take place in Adirondack State Park, NY, Central Vermont and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, located in North West, NJ. The following courses are available during the months of December, January, and February. Depending on snowfall the following courses may be offered in March. We also run international mountaineering trips and expeditions to the Andes, Pakistan, Bhutan, Ecuador, Tibet, India and Nepal. Mountaineering Northeast

Intro to Mountaineering

This course is a basic introduction to winter camping and basic mountaineering skills.

Course length: 2 days

Location: Adirondack State Park, NY; Calvin Coolidge State Forest, VT; Delaware Water Gap NRA, NJ/PA

Prerequisite: Intro to Backpacking and Intro to Rock Climbing

Ratio: 3:1 (private and couples guiding available)

Total miles: This course is an introduction to basic winter mountaineering and camping skills, so the mileage depends on how you progress in a winter setting.

Cost: $350 per person

Course description: This course will teach you all of the fundamentals you'll need to successfully plan, pursue and complete a trip in a technical and non-technical winter environment. Basic crampon and ice axe skills, roped travel skills, snow anchors & belays, avalanche awareness & snow testing/analysis, setting up camp in the snow, route planning and finding, how to prepare for a winter environment, and much more!!!

Mount Marcy Winter Climb- 5,344 ft/1629 m

The highest peak in the Adirondacks and in New York State, Mount Marcy is also one of the only two 5000 foot peaks in the entire range.

 

Course length: 2 days

Location: Adirondack State Park, NY

Prerequisites: Intro to Backpacking, Intro to Mountaineering

Ratio: 5:1

Strenuous

Total miles: 14.8 miles

Cost: $275 per person

 

Course description: One day of scenic hiking on local trails then a summit day.

Day one: We begin our first day at Adirondack Loj, by Heart Lake, on the northwest side of the mountain. We take in the Adirondack scenery, hiking on some local trails then spending the night at the Loj. 

Day two: We start early the next day on the Van Hoevenberg Trail to the summit.

Mt.Colden Winter Climb- 4,714 ft/1437 m

The eleventh in height in the Adirondacks, this peak is rarely visited. It offers Class 3 - 5.7 rated climbing.  This peak offers spectacular climbing, especially during the winter months.

 

Course length: 2 days

Location: Adirondack State Park, NY

Prerequisites: Intro to Backpacking, Intro to Mountaineering, basic rock climbing experience

Ratio: 5:1

Moderately Strenuous to Strenuous

Cost: $275 per person

 

Course description: Depends on which route we're taking up the mountain. Normal route is the Trap Dyke route, starting at Avalanche Lake.
