Guide Training

Northeast Mountain Guiding is an approved provider for the Professional Hiking Guides Association (PHGA). The PHGA trains and certifies hiking and backpacking guides in the United States at a professional level through a 6 level training and certification program. Below you will find the courses that are offered by NMG.

Hiking Guide

Course length: 2 days

Prerequisites: 18 years of age, Wilderness First Aid certification, CPR/AED (Red Cross or AHA)

 

Assistant Backpacking Guide

Course length: 3 days

Prerequisites: 18 years of age, Wilderness First Aid certification, CPR/AED (Red Cross or AHA), PHGA certified Hiking Guide

Certificate coverage: Day trips and trips with an PHGA Certified Backpacking Guide Level I or above

 

 

Backpacking Guide Level I

Course length: 3 days

Prerequisites: 18 years of age, Wilderness Advanced First Aid Certification, Leave No Trace Trainer, CPR/AED Certification (Red Cross or AHA), NPGA certified Assistant Backpacking Guide, 70% or above on the PHGA Wilderness Navigation Exam II, 144 hour apprenticeship program with an PHGA certified Backpacking Guide

Certificate coverage: Day trips and trips ranging from overnight to 5 days in length on terrain up to Class II

 

 

Backpacking Guide Level II

Course length: 5 days

Prerequisites: 18 years of age, Wilderness First Responder Certification, Leave No Trace Trainer, CPR/AED Certification (Red Cross or AHA), PHGA certified Backpacking Guide Level I, Avalanche Awareness Workshop

Certificate coverage: Day trips and trips ranging from overnight to 15 days in length on terrain up to Class III

 

Backpacking Guide Level III

Course length:  6 days

Prerequisites: 18 years of age, Wilderness First Responder Certification, Leave No Trace Master Educator, CPR/AED Certification (Red Cross or AHA), PHGA certified Backpacking Guide Level II, Red Cross Water Safety Certification, FDA Food Handler's License, AIARE Level I

Certificate coverage: Day trips to expeditions

 

 

Trekking Guide

Course length: 6 days

Prerequisites: 18 years of age, Wilderness First Responder Certification, Leave No Trace Master Educator, CPR/AED Certification (Red Cross or AHA), PHGA certified Backpacking Guide Level III, Red Cross Water Safety Certification, Wilderness Starguard, FDA Food Handler's License

Certificate coverage: Day trips, expeditions and trekking/touring of any length

 

 

Note: After taking the course every individual must pass the assessment to gain certification for that level.
